Deadline approaching for undergraduate college students interested in 10-week, paid opportunity

AUSTIN, Minn. — Monday, March 19 — Applications are due in full by the end of March for college undergraduates interested in the 10-week, paid summer internship offered by The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota-Mayo Clinic.

Items must be postmarked no later than March 31 for The Hormel Institute’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (S.U.R.E.) internship program that runs from June to August. The annual program matches each intern with a scientist as a mentor for a summer of laboratory work in one of the Institute’s 13 medical research sections.

Last year, The Hormel Institute, which conducts world-renowned research aimed at discoveries leading to the prevention and control of cancer, hosted nine intern students for its S.U.R.E. program.

“Educating and developing students to enter careers in science is an important objective at The Hormel Institute,” said Dr. Zigang Dong, Executive Director. “This opportunity gives students critical and direct experience and helps build a resume that will open doors to greater opportunities.”

Applications can be submitted by college undergraduates who will be entering his or her sophomore, junior or senior year this fall and is majoring in a science or medical-related field. They must submit a completed application form, resume, official college transcript and at least two letters of recommendation.

Each year, The Hormel Institute selects undergraduate students to work in the S.U.R.E. program on research projects that expand their knowledge of basic research. They also learn about equipment and techniques not generally available in undergraduate academic programs.

Students are selected based on their high level of academic achievements as well as their plans to pursue careers in science and medically related fields.
