E-Progress Report of The Hormel Institute

MESSAGE FROM DR. ZIGANG DONG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

The urgency of finding answers to cancer keeps us all working extremely hard at The Hormel Institute. Research achievements in lung cancer and colon cancer were recently published and our scientists continue to work every day to find new discoveries to treat and prevent cancer – we are so proud of them and know your dollars invested in The Hormel Institute are producing important results. On July 10 is the Hotel California “A Salute to the Eagles” PTTP fundraising concert and ticket sales are now underway and going fast. Generous donors are providing $1000 sponsorships to allow families touched by cancer a carefree night. We are so thankful to Gary and Pat Ray for spearheading this event and Richard and Nancy Knowlton, Hy-Vee and others for planning to make this a special and successful evening.  Eight innovative cancer research grants are underway that would NOT be possible without the grants YOU provide. Thank you for helping fund research so people can live longer, healthier lives, uninterrupted by cancer.

In friendship,

Zigang Dong, M.D., Dr. P.H.

RESEARCH

Lung Cancer Target Identified by Institute Scientists

A new target leading to a potential novel therapy for lung cancer was discovered through research led by Dr. Luke Hoeppner, head of the Molecular Biology and Translational Cancer lab. Drs. Hoeppner, Sk. Kayum Alam and other colleagues discovered a protein called DARPP-32 accelerates lung cancer growth and helps cancer cells migrate.

Colon Cancer Metastasis Breakthrough Discovered at The Hormel Institute

Dr. Tatyana Zykova, along with other scientists in the Cellular & Molecular Biology lab led by Dr. Zigang Dong, published breakthrough colon cancer research – the team discovered how a specific protein helps colon cancer metastasize and used this discovery to find a possible new colon cancer therapy.
