The Hormel Institute is proud to offer cryoEM usage for researchers beyond the Institute to accelerate scientific discoveries throughout our region.

Users should know: Often it is sample quality, not solely the microscope used, that impacts the quality of results. We strongly recommend reviewing and following our sample quality and screening protocols ahead of your session for results of the highest possible quality.

Advance your research by using the cryoEM services at The Hormel Institute.

Here is what you can expect from the process.

  1. Submit a request form: [directions for how to do so; how long it might take to hear back]
  2. Register as a New User: This can be done using the iLab system.
  3. Schedule your initial walkthrough and/or training: Once you have registered as a new user, EM Lab staff will contact you to schedule a walkthrough and/or basic training session. Keep in mind that while an initial visitation can be done online when necessary, it is likely that further training as well as demonstrations of both skills and knowledge will be required before users are allowed into the facility themselves without an escort or permitted to utilize instrumentation, regardless of any prior expertise or experience they have.
  4. Supplement your knowledge: After an initial visit, we request that new users supplement their knowledge about our facility: Sample Preparation, CryoEM, CryoET, and Data Analysis.
  5. Schedule Individual Training with EM Lab instruments: This is done online using the iLab system. Before your training, read through our Sample Protocols, Quick Start Guides, and Online Manuals.
