The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Internship program at The Hormel Institute allows interns to work with scientists on biomedical research projects. Students expand their knowledge of basic research and gain firsthand experience learning about equipment and techniques that are generally not available in undergraduate academic programs.
Students are selected for the SURE internship program based on their high level of academic achievement, recommendations from academic leaders, college majors, and plans to pursue careers in science-related fields.
In addition to lab experience, students participate in weekly professional development courses and get to know fellow interns, engaging in fun activities to build community and teamwork skills. At the conclusion of the internship, students will highlight their summer work and learning through a presentation and poster session.

Who is eligible for SURE? How do I apply?
Applicant preference for the SURE Internship is given to undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year.
The SURE application deadline has passed for 2024.
When the SURE application period reopens, you can apply by submitting:
- An updated Resume or CV
- Undergraduate school transcripts (unofficial is acceptable)
- Names of 2 references
- Personal essay describing your academic and career goals, interest in science education or health and medical research, how you will benefit from the SURE internship program, what you want to learn or accomplish from this program, any research experience you have had, if applicable, and any personal challenges you have faced that have influenced your life and/or academic career (1 page maximum)
For non-U.S. citizen applicants: International undergraduate students who are attending a U.S. college or university as full-time students are eligible to apply. We strongly urge any international student applicants to consult with trained international student advising personnel at one’s college or university before seeking any off-campus opportunities.
