Last Thursday of each month to provide inside look at world-renowned cancer research
World-renowned cancer research and cutting-edge technologies will be showcased in a series of three monthly open house events starting this Thursday evening at The Hormel Institute.
Continuing a summer tradition, The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota-Mayo Clinic, will offer a free open house to the public from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Thursday (June 27) as well as on Thursday, July 25, and Thursday, Aug. 29.
Attendees can arrive any time during the open house, entering through the Institute’s west, main lobby. The summer open house events offer an inside look at The Hormel Institute’s internationally respected cancer research and state-of-the-art medical research facility in Austin.
“We look forward to hosting new and returning friends to The Hormel Institute through these events,” Executive Director Dr. Zigang Dong said. “It is just one of the ways we can show our deep appreciation for the tremendous support we receive from the community.”
Visitors will learn about The Hormel Institute’s over 70 years of history and its latest cancer research. Plans for The Hormel Institute’s upcoming major expansion, set to break ground in 2014 on its east side, also will be on display. About half of that project’s cost will be supported by $13.5 million in bonding funds from the State of Minnesota.
Other aspects of the open house tour will include wearing 3-D glass to view a 3-D imaging demonstration related to one of The Hormel Institute’s breakthrough cancer research discoveries and viewing the two IBM supercomputers that are part of the Institute’s International Center of Research Technology (ICRT).
A display table also will show various fruits and vegetables that contain natural, anticancer compounds used in the Institute’s research focused on discoveries leading to the prevention and control of cancer.
