KAUS to run first radiothon Friday to support Institute

More PTTP activity this weekend; picture deadline 3 PM Thursday for Bruins game

KAUS AM 1480 will run its first, 12-hour “Pledging for Pink” radiothon Friday to raise awareness and support for The Hormel Institute’s cancer research in Austin.

As a new feature of “Paint the Town Pink,” KAUS-AM will run the radiothon from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring a wide variety of information about The Hormel Institute’s world-renowned cancer research as well as numerous interviews with those affected by cancer, scientists studying the disease, people raising vital funds to support research and others.

Also, a deadline is looming for those who would like to participate in the picture montages planned to be shown by the Austin Bruins on its Jumbotron screen for the first and second intermissions of Saturday’s “Paint the Rink Pink” game. Those interested need to send photos to the Bruins by 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, by emailing images to: text@austinbruins.com

Austin Bruins staff is collecting photos of cancer survivors and those who have passed away from cancer to include in a picture montage during the first intermission following the traditional on-ice program. Another montage showing submitted pictures of pink decorations in the community and “Paint the Town Pink” events is planned for the second intermission.

Tickets sold out on Tuesday for the 4th annual “Paint the Rink Pink” game, making it a sellout event for every year of its history. Since 2011, the Austin Bruins’ pink game has raised about $100,000 for The Hormel Institute’s breast cancer research.

Other PTTP events this weekend include the Austin Packers boys basketball team hosting its 2nd annual “Shooting for a Cure” game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Faribault Falcons in Packer Gym.

On Sunday, the St. Olaf Church Dining Committee will host its 3rd annual Pink Pancakes & Spam breakfast from 8 a.m. to Noon at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 306 Second St. N.W. in Austin. Cost is $5 for ages 11 and older; $3 for ages 4-10.

A PTTP event initially scheduled for this Thursday at Riverland Community College has been rescheduled for the following Thursday, Feb. 27. The first “Wine, Women & Whatever” fundraiser at Riverland’s west campus building in Austin will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $30, including appetizers and wine. Call 433-0633 to reserve tickets.

Donations from the “pink” fundraising in 2011 and 2012 helped support the acquisition of cutting-edge technology for The Hormel Institute’s researchers to use in accelerating discoveries for breast cancer research. Funds from the 2013 PTTP were distributed last year in the form of seven grants to seven scientists at The Hormel Institute for breast cancer research. Known as “seed grants,” these funds are helping Institute researchers conduct work that will enable them to better seek significantly larger grants for breast cancer research.
