3rd annual event to offer one-mile loop starting, ending at The Hormel Institute
The Hormel Institute is partnering with local groups focused on healthy living to offer its 3rd annual “Walk for a Cancer Free World” on July 5 as part of Austin’s Freedom Fest.
A new, shorter walking route – about one mile – will start and end at The Hormel Institute, 801 16th Ave. N.E., beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 5. The all-ages walk will head west to the Wildwood Park neighborhood where participants then will loop around the neighborhood before strolling past the front of Hormel Foods Corporate Office on their way back to the Institute.
Following the walk, The Hormel Institute, Mower Refreshed, YMCA of Austin and Hy-Vee’s registered dietitian Jen Haugen will offer healthy living giveaways and information until 5:30 p.m.
This Friday, June 21, is the early registration deadline for participants to register for $10 per person (includes T-shirt) and $30 per family (4-person limit). Later registrations will be $15 per person and $45 per family.
Pre-registration is available at the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, 329 N. Main St., Suite 102. Same-day registration will be accepted from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Hormel Institute. Strollers are welcomed for the walk.
All registration money from the event goes 100 percent directly to funding The Hormel Institute’s world-renowned research focused on discoveries leading to the prevention and control of cancer.
The Hormel Institute hosts the annual walk as part of the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Freedom Fest to raise awareness about the Institute’s cutting-edge cancer research and its many community supporters.

Established in 1942, The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota-Mayo Clinic, is a world-renowned cancer research center focused on discoveries leading to the prevention and control of cancer.
The BioScience Triangle growing the collaborative partnership between the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Mayo Clinic-Rochester and The Hormel Institute-Austin is continuing to expand, with plans for a major expansion to begin in 2014 at The Hormel Institute to add laboratories and better space for its International Center of Research Technology.
